Spot the Red Flags: Questions That Could Help You Stop a Scam in Its Tracks

At Peoples Bank, protecting your money and your peace of mind, is one of our top priorities. Unfortunately, scams are becoming more common and more convincing every day. But the good news is the best defense is awareness.

If you’re making a withdrawal or sending money, take a moment to ask yourself these important questions. Even just one “yes” could mean you’re being targeted by a scam.

Ask Yourself:
• Were you told not to tell anyone the reason for your withdrawal?
• Have you been instructed to lie about the purpose of the withdrawal—perhaps saying it’s for a car purchase or home remodel?
• Did someone you’ve never met in person (or haven’t seen in years) ask you to send them money?
• Have you recently been told to buy gift cards for someone else?
• Has anyone asked to remotely access your computer or mobile phone?
• Did someone claim to be a government official demanding money to avoid arrest, deportation, or fines?
• Did you get a deposit from someone you don’t know and are now being asked to withdraw and send it elsewhere?
• Were you told you won a prize, lottery, or sweepstakes but must pay taxes or fees first?
• Did you receive an urgent call from a loved one claiming they’re in trouble and need money fast?
• Were you told to deposit cash into a cryptocurrency ATM?
• Are you withdrawing funds because you’re being threatened or harassed?

If you answered yes to any of the above, stop and report it immediately. These are common signs of fraud and acting quickly can prevent serious loss.
